    Hi!

Please could someone shed some light on something that I've been thinking for quite a while now.

I use SVP (UK) to buy DVD-Rs. I mostly buy TDKs (TTH, TY etc) and unbranded/silver topped Taiyo's. I became a bit suspicious when I ordered a batch of silver topped Taiyo Yuden's from cd-rmedia.co.uk (now closed) for almost half the price of what I had been paying for Taiyos before. The delivery note stated Datasafe but at the time, the dye was what I needed, i.e. TYG0X.

My question, what is the difference between the Taiyo's in the link below and why are some BRANDS with Taiyo dye less expensive than the actual Taiyo's:

    http://svp.co.uk/brands.php#t

Please click the Taiyo Yuden logo. As you can see from the link above, the MAXWELL and DATASAFE's with Taiyo dye are almost half the price of the TAIYO YUDEN branded taiyo's. Would there be any quality difference?

Thank you in advance for your replies!

Taiyo Yuden doesn't sell its dye. Any claim that they do is a scam. There is a 2-step process in the flow of fake Taiyo Yuden media into the market. The first step is the media manufacturer's rationalization that it's OK to "use" Taiyo Yuden's MID (media ID). They do this so burners will recognize the disc and use a predefined write strategy. If a burner doesn't recognize a MID on a disc, it uses a default write strategy which often produces poor burns. These 2-bit media manufacturer's then sell their media into various distribution channels that move this stuff into the market. Since it has a Taiyo Yuden MID, unscrupulous resellers sell it as the "read deal" Taiyo Yuden media. These jokers will lie through their teeth and swear on their mother's grave that it's "genuine" Taiyo Yuden media.

Buy from a well established reputable dealer and you can avoid all of the shuck and jive.

I personally would not buy anything but the Taiyo Yuden Taiyo Yuden ones.

I like SVP and have used them in the past. They have good prices....I personally would just get the originals and be done with it.

  4. Be careful of fakes ! Look in the dye area towards the center ring for GG followed by a number (for DVD-R 8x) or GH xxxx (for DVD-R 16x) or TG xxxx (for DVD+R 8x) or TH xxxxx (for DVD+R 16x) (I'm using xxxx as an example, the number is bigger). There is also the VALUELINE taiyo yuden, DVD-R, these are less expensive, and normally they should work great at their rated burn speed or one step lower, however odds are you might get a few bad discs in the batch - some have had more, the results will vary greatly - some people reported scratches on some discs in the batch. The value line use the same coding on the dye - so the only way to notice them is the sticker on the tape wrap - unless some less than honest company removes it
