The only format guaranteed to be playable on a DVD player is DVD.

The author of ffmpegx has written a nice manual on how to convert X into Y. There are also extensive docs online written by a community of users. Have a look at them, particularly the material you find under the HOW TO section on the very left of this forum's page.

Once you've converted the files into a DVD format, then you burn the result onto a disc, using your favorite burning program (Toast, eg). Then play and enjoy.

Have a look at http://www.ffmpegx.com/howtos.html#dvd, and post back if you run into trouble or some part is unclear.
Some choices that you'll have to make depend on the specifications of source file that you are trying to convert.
E.g. if your source file is 23.976 fps, then you could best be using the DVD mpeg2enc preset, which allows you to "Set 3:2" (=apply a 3:2 pulldown) in the Options tab.
