Depends on the size of the file you're converting from. The length of the video, quality, etc etc etc.
The average runs for me for about 20 minutes of video you get about 200 megs of data.
for an hour you get about 600 megs.
Then you have to remember your swap space and virtual memory settings etc etc etc during your conversion so to be safe I usually have at least 2 gigs free, though I've done it with considerably less.
1 gig at the least IMHO but to be safe I try to stick at 2. -
i use a lossless codec so i only get about 8-10 min and use up 4gigs......i keep around 30gigs free on my drive for each vcd i make which ends up to about 45-50 min on a cdr. though i don't use all the space at once but its there if i need it........

Jesus H.P. Christ in a Macintosh!
I don't even have 30 gigs on my entire system!poor system...neglected...
I'm lucky if I have 8-10 gigs free at any given time out of my 20...don't ask where that 20 is...I haven't seen it since I had to install Micro$oft...I swear the thing is a HD sucking virus...no other explination.
Hmmm...I guess there's something to be said for loss during conversion...a lot less HD space taken up.
