I have not been able to convert AVI downloaded movies onto a usable DVD + r OR dvd rw disk that will
play on a stand alone player. I am using the correct Usa, Japan setting, and have tried every optional setting.

The DVD player shows the same error message "disc error" "the platback feature may not be available
    on this disc"

    Can someone helup me?

What software are you using for conversion ?

What software are you using for burning ?

What media are you burning to ?

All will have an influence, and all these details are needed for us to give you meaningful help.

My preferred options are to convert to DVD with FAVC, then burn to Verbatim discs with Imgburn. This works very well.

Simpler is to get a DVD player that will play Divx/Xvid encoded AVI files without converting, then just burn them as data.

Thank you for your reply. I have be using VSO ConvertXtoDVD 3.1 for
conversion from AVI to DVD. The VSO program then is used to burn
the image onto a disk (maxell, DVD+RW @ 2X. The media is NTFS
OS: XP PRO. Just recently, I have attempted to use WinAVI_Video_Converter 8.0 (for conversion) and Nero 8 to burn the
DVD. The result is the same. "disc error" "playback feature may not
be available on this disc" "Please eject the disk"

    Possible problems:

    1) You are actually burning a data disc and not DVD format video. Put the disc in a PC and if you see a folder named VIDEO_TS, then you can eliminate this is a cause. If you do not see such a folder, then this is your problem.
    2) You aren't finalizing the discs. If that's the case they won't be readable on a PC either.
    3) Your DVD player doesn't like your media. Use Verbatim instead.
