I have been using Sony Vegas 7.0c for over a year now and I was thinking of upgrading to Vegas Pro 8.0. However, I can't seem to find any detail on the new features it offers. Does anyone know anything about Vegas Pro 8.0? I have checked Sony's website but nothing much there. Is it worth upgrading from 7.0? From what I have read so far, it doesn't sound worth it...

Just go through the overview where features are flagged.

You may want to wait a few months for Vegas Pro 9. No details yet.

I did that upgrade, mainly due to the good price I got. I live in the SD world so no great advantage to me in going to 8 or Pro as they call it. You will find more info over at jetdv.com. They probably also have some info on 9 if there is any around at all.

Thanks for the info. I don't think I will be upgrading anytime soon. If need be, I will spend the extra money towards Adobe Premiere Pro or a turn-key system.

I am still using 7 because there is nothing in 8 to tempt me other than the titler, as I still work mostly in SD. I will probably go to 9 when it comes out and gets patched. I personally would not be going to Premiere over Vegas though. Premiere and I have never seen eye to eye.

I use Vegas also. A friend uses Premiere CS3 and teases me about needing to "upgrade" to Premiere. What are some of the things that you don't like about Premiere?

I prefer Vegas to Premiere on many levels and DVD Architect to Encore. Vegas is more stable and intuitive.

I still use Premiere Pro for graphics intensive projects that need direct access to Illustrator or Photoshop but both of those programs can also be used with Vegas through file export-import.

I think you should use the Premiere 30 day trial to do an actual project, then decide.

If your job requires group interaction with others using the Adobe Suite, then the balance tips to Premiere.

  9. The big advantage I got with Vegas 8 is the multi cam feature. Once you've got your tracks synced up you tell it to create a multi camera track and Vegas will automatically fit each camera into your preview window and label it for you. You can then switch between angles by clicking on the one you want or just pressing the number. Hold CTRL when you make a switch and it makes and automatic crossfade. For projects I do like beauty pageants or high school graduations it saves a ton of time. Now if you want to do more in depth edits like showing 2 angles at once or something similar it doesn't help.

Vegas 8 also has the built in titler which I was not all that impressed with. Maybe other people have found it useful. I think it was geared more towards new users who are switching from other programs that have animated text presets built in.

I started out using Premiere with version 4, and persevered through to Premiere Pro version 1 ans gave up after that. By then I was already happy with Vegas, but wanted to see if Premiere had become usable. Basically, I have never, ever been able to get Premiere stable enough to trust for any length of time. No matter what platform it has run on, from clean installs to stable, happy run-in installs, from generic grey boxes to custom built by AV specialists hardware, it has always been crash-prone, unstable and un-usable.

Vegas, on the other-hand, has always been rock solid, far more flexible, and only lags behind Premiere in the amount of plugins available to it. For the most part these plugins are ultimately little more than novelty items anyway, so it has never been a great loss.

I echo all that. The last straw was when Premiere split into Premiere Pro, Encore and Audition each with a stiff upgrade fee and all unstable and half baked. Vegas was built over Sound Forge and includes DVD Architect. My last Premiere Pro upgrade was 1.1 here but I've used v2 and CS3 elsewhere.

I just received a couple of DVDs that my friend authored with Encore CS3 and noticed they weren't closed. A long story short - I learned that Encore CS3 doesn't close DVDs! There are a bunch of very upset users sounding off about this on Adobe Forums. Apparently the almighty Adobe can't be bothered to fix it! I suppose they will fix it in Encore CS4 and call it a new "feature". That way they can charge for the upgrade to get this new "feature"!
