  1. I got some AVI file but they're in difirent resolution (640x352 or 720x400). Now I want to resize all of them into the resolution 640x480 by crooping or padding them without quality loseless. I don't know how to do it and use which software. Can someone help me? (I know very few about video editing so please guide me specifically).

I also notice some DVD_ripping group on the internet compress the dvd very good with the quality same as the hdtv but when i try to rip some dvd the result was very bad. It seemed like they used some filter in virtualdub, is that right?

If you crop or padd you must reconvert and you will lose a bit video quality then. If you are just playing the avi on a computer you can use just zoom while you play in players like Media Player Classic.

But if you want to crop use for example virtualdub, load the avi, under video->filters add the null transform filter, click cropping, (or add the resize filter to padd them to 640x480), choose video->compression and select divx codec or xvid codec, choose audio->direct stream copy and last file->save as avi.
