Okay I bought this laptop from staples for my wife to use in nursing school.
Her school has graciously provided xp for a free download to new students.
I would like to install xp for use as a dual boot option. I have found this tutorial for help with this. After reading that thread entirely I have noticed people with sata hard drives had problems with this. This laptop does have an sata hard drive.
Have any of you tried to install dual boot xp on a laptop with vista pre-installed before? Anyone have any issues with xp installing on a sata drive?
I should add that this laptop did not come with any discs. It has a restore partition on the hard drive instead of an actual vista disc.
I'm also going to install ubuntu so that should handle the boot loader option for me. Does anyone have any advice they can offer before I partake in this adventure?

Typically, you would install the older OS before the newer OS when doing dual boot. In this case, I question why you are messing with it all. There shouldn't be any application she will use that would specifically require XP and the laptop is plenty fast enough to run Vista. No reason to make it more complicated, especially for someone elses PC that likely doesn't even care and only wants it simple and operational.

I have similar laptop HP dv9925nr.
I would like to do the same thing, dual boot xp on a laptop with vista pre-installed. I would even be happy to remove Vista completely. I've been sick of that bloated bullshitware OS.
If someone ever find a solution, please post here. -
If you remove vista it will void your warrenty.
That said you can unload vista and put XP on the laptop but you have to install your chipset driver before you install your other drivers or you won't ever get your audio to work. You will have to download drivers from other places besides hp as they don't even give you your chipset driver.
This link will give you the audio driver and I'm still trying to get the chipset.

I had about 20 or 30 drivers for this laptop but then I had to reload the computer again and killed all the drivers.
