I know that Mac the ripper is a highly regarded piece of freeware but I'm having real problems in converting any video file once it's been ripped. Are there others which will do a similar job?

The freeware MTR 2.6.6 is from 2005. Studios have introduced new copy protection tricks since then. The newer donationware MTR 3.0r14 knows its way around more of these tricks.

I don't even know that they are the rightful "heir" to MTR, which started as freeware. Why should somebody be allowed to take freeware, update it, then charge for it?
And if buying the software (via online digital delivery) takes more than 6 hours ("this quickly") ... plus the other reasons given above ... I would not at all be surprised if MOST PEOPLE get their versions from alternate locations, be it a torrent or whatever else.
Some of these things just leave me scratching my head sometimes. Makes no sense.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

Ripdifferent is not the developer, they just host the MTR forum.
The developer is and and has always been Geezerbuttz, who, for personal reasons, chooses to keep himself and MTR "under a rock".
Is there a better way for distribution? Yes, and we're working on it.
Hopefully, in the not to distant future we'll be able to make all this and a few other surprises public. -
I've never seen mention of it anywhere here and I've never tried it myself but...there is a new boy on the block, Ripit.
I can't remember what the current "gift" for MTR is but I don't imagine there's a big difference in cost. It seems to have its fair share of teething troubles and I'm sure MTR still has more than the edge over it but competition is always good IMO.
Course, could be a complete hoax
