I know folks have been asking for this for awhile, so I tried a few captures with both my JVC HR-S9900U and HR-S7600U from an S-VHS recording of the Ice Age DVD test. Part of the reason for this was that I have suspected for some time that there is something wrong with the "sharp" setting on my 9900. Turns out that there is as shown by these caps.

LS, you mentioned a JVC service center you use, can you tell me where it is? I'm thinking of seeing how much it might cost to get the 9900 "sharp" setting fixed.

Anyway, here they are for folks to compare. The DNR/TBC is turned off as is the R3.

    9900 - Soft

    7600 - Soft

9900 - Sharp (something clearly wrong here)

Oops...I screwed up, its my 9900. I edited the above post to correct my error.

LS, you posted while I was still editing. Did you see my question about the JVC service center?

Yes. I flipped through your images using IrfanView, and your 9900 "sharp" setting looks more like a "smear to the right" setting.

Are the 7600 images from the same frame as the 9900 images? I see a very slight difference in the eyeball shape.

I prefer the 9900 images; they have a bit more contrast. Which machine was the tape recorded on?

I took a quick look at a 9800 schematic (I don't have one for the 9900). Everything is so integrated these days. My guess is that this would be an expensive repair. Do you really need the "sharp" setting?

They are the same frame, and yes, I noticed the eyeball shape also.

The tape was recorded on the 9900, so it might have an edge there.

I previously haven't thought that I needed the sharp setting, but it would be nice if it worked just in case. Unfortunately, you are probably right about the repair, but you never know for sure unless you take it in and spend the money for the diagnosis.

  6. SOFT: The soft setting of the 7600 looks less aggressive to me. The 9900 is too soft.

AUTO: I like the 9900 better.

    SHARP: Yes, something is wrong.

In all modes, the 7600 looks brighter. The clouds in the lower left, appear washed out. Maybe if you recorded a seperate tape on both VCR's and played them back on the same one, it would be less difference between them. I wish I had this ICE AGE DVD. I would like to compare these to my 9911. I've been using AUTO mode mostly, but I just ran into one tape where it made everything too soft. Had to use EDIT instead.

    No way!

The 7600 runs circles around the 9900. Now I guess I have to sell my 9900.....
