You may find your options limited with an older single core Pentium PC.

Most programs require at least a Core2Duo for AVCHD editing and recommend a quad core. The Cineform Neoscene digital intermediate also suggests at least a Core2Duo although your single core would probably work. Neoscene works in Sony Vegas Movie Studio or Adobe Premiere Elements.

Sony produces *.mts and Canon makes *.m2ts; both refer to valid AVCHD files that smplayer should be able to play on a recent Core2Duo system.
For the nth time, with the possible exception of certain Intel processors, I don't have/ever owned anything whose name starts with "i".

I have used Vegas successfully with a similar spec. pc to yours. Download the Vegas Movie Studio Pro trial and try it.
With an earlier version I had to use a converter first because it would not accept the m2ts.
I do not use capture software. My camera saves onto an SD card . I copy the files directly from that into the computer using a card reader
You do not need an ultra high specification processor for editing although it would be quicker. Probably additional RAM would help to speed up the rendering but I do not know by how much, Drinking coffee and reading a book also helps at this stage. Keep your editing source files on one drive and the rendered 'save to' file on the other drive. This should save time moving the drive heads.....cheers mike

You can try the Vegas Movie Studio Platinum package first and see how it does on your machine. If you feel it needs speeding up, add the Neoscene digital intermediate.

Thank you so much all of you, I`ll give Sony Vegas Movie Studio a try, and like you ml999, transfer the files to pc through cardreader. Will see if it works without converting for a start.... Have a pleasent weekend,

I can only relate this question to Vegas Pro.

You would set an AVCHD project, use AVCHD sourse file (m2ts) and export AVCHD. All resolution and other settings should match for all three. This would be the prerequisite to any "smart render". I'm not sure that the Movie Studio version will smart render. Otherwise it will re-encode.

How is playback and search on the timeline?

I wasn't saying you should buy the Pro addition, just try those settings and see if they work in Movie Studio Platinum. I don't have that version.
