  1. I got a Jazz HDV178 cheapy HD camcorder. First its amazing. The video I got from onboard my camera rocket are just stunning.

Here is the problem. They are typically 250mb videos. I only need around 50mb of it I the flight from lift off to landing. I do not need all the crap before and after this. SO I just want to do a simple CUT of that section out of the video.

The videos play fine in both media player and VLC.

I do NOT want to reencode. At least not till after I have cut it. :-)

I loaded the file into virtual dub and avidemux. both can read the files just fine. I select my start and end point set for direct stream or copy and hit save.

Ok fine. Except I can not playback the videos. They are not useless (the resulting video from the edit)

with vdub mediaplayer will not play the resulting file and and vlc only plays the audio. thi resulting file is now also unreable properly in vdub the program that MADE the file (black video)

avidemux again works fine but this time on trying to play the file media player gives a compressor error refuses to play and vlc crashes the screen all together when I try to play it.

    they are h264 avc at 1280x720 30fps

    Suggestions?

  4. I have a temporary though less than ideal fix for now. It seems I can alter the END point of the file but NOT the start point with Virtual Dub. As long as I leave the start point alone it cuts it fine. So in the future I just make sure I start the video as close to the desired point as possible to eliminate "fluff" in the beginning.

When I have to cut here is the only way I have found to do it so far. I cut off the END fluff with Vdub. Then I use vdub to convert the whole thing to divx then once its divx I can now cut the beginning fluff out. I tried cutting and converting to divx in one step but no joy I have to full convert to something else FIRST before I mess with th start point of the video.

The results are tolerable. I would still like to find a way to successfully cut the video without transcoding if possible.

I was able to replicate your problems in AVI Demux. I also tried to put the edited video into an MP4 container, just to see if it made a difference. I have to re-encode the audio to something suitable to do this, and even then the results were a black screen.
