What is the soundboard source ? Card on on-board ?

Obvious suggestion but have you checked the audio mixer settings ?

If it worked before with Vista installed then I doubt whether it's a software issue. But then it's Vista so anything goes.

But coming back to my previous post. Most onboard (and cards) install an audio mixer panel. Mine is a Realtek and is accessed from an icon in the tray. All outputs have their own settings and it is not unknown for an OS to alter these without any input on your part.

Better to check this out first before installing another OS.

No mixer panel, all options in the vista sound panel are set to maximum. I really dont want to have to go and buy a seperate sound card and have a big extension cable to plug my headphones into just to get clear audio, but that may be the only solution.
I would be amazed if Asus did not have a utility for this as part of their driver package.
