Apologies if this is a question asked before, but I'm looking for a dummies answer.

What I want to do is take a DVD and replace the audio track withour re-rendering the video and losing video quality in the process.

My expertise is in audio and remastering audio. I often come across DVDs that would benefit by having the audio improved and would like to replace the audio with an improved version. Ripping the audio is no big deal. But how do I edit the video, replace the audio in sync and create a new DVD?

I'm just getting started. It is my understanding that most editing programs that allow me to edit/remix/replace the audio tracks rerender the video, usually with some loss of video quality in the process.

Also, how do I extract the video from the DVD exactly in the original form. Most DVD rippers encode the video in the format selected (e.g., AVI). I found a VOB extraction program that extracts the MPEG data from VOB files. Is this the way to go.

Again, I just want to replace the audio. Same video, same menus, same chapters. No loss of video quality.

Thanks in advance for help and advice.

If you don't need to edit the video then the process is simple. Demux the audio, process it, replace it. There are quite a few guides telling you how to replace audio in an already authored DVD.

If, for some reason, you do need to edit both, I would use VOB2MPG to extract the program stream (video and audio), edit the file in a dedicated mpeg editor such as Womble Video Wizard or VideoRedo, then output to elementary streams the edited result. I would then process the audio stream, and author a new DVD with the results.

Both approaches avoid re-encoding the video.

Thanks for the info. VOB3MPG 2.5 is the demux program I've been using.

VideoRedo looks interesting. I'm going to try it right away.
