I have seen some videos streamed on a website and would like to capture it to a file on the laptop so that I can show my folks

The link to the page is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adYbFQFXG0U for one video stream and the other link I forget at the moment.

Please could someone tell me what I need to be able to capture streaming video.

    Many Thanks in advance

You could also install the basic real player which will add the download function to firefox browser.

You place mouse over video while its playing, and by default, in the top right corner, the download option will appear.

Click to download, as soon as it kicks off, you might want to pause the video playback to conserve bandwidth and to help download the file faster.
