Hollywood's new copy protection scheme is to make all crap movies. I did not even bother to rent movies this Tuesday. Last Tuesday I only got two. Everything is crap from small studios, direct to DVD, low box office titles and no blockbusters. The last good movie to come out was 10,000 BC, $110 mil at the box office. Are we down to one good movie a month?

My theory on why is that Hollywood passed the business on the their undeserving children. They are now passing the business on to their kids and nieces and nephews. The original creative talent that built Hollywood is dead and buried. How many times can the same old movies be remade? It's time for someone out there to pick up the torch and come up with some new material. Sad to say it probably won't come out of the US.

  2. 10,000BC was a good movie?!....To each his own.
I do agree that Hollywood keeps remaking old classics that shouldn't be touched(eg Willy Wonka),is it me or did Johnny Depp seem like a creepy pedophile?

    This statement alone needs addressing.

    1. Size of box office does not denote quality.

    2. It is proof that the human mind can adjust to anything. Reduce the quality, and eventually a portion of the population will adapt to believe that this is the level it should be. Note also : Big Brother, American/Australian Idol, Survivor, So You Think You Can Dance etc. All rate through the roof, yet none of these are quality programs.

In fact there were many quality films last year. They didn't make a lot of money because Hollywood has conditioned the largest audience it has to accept mediocrity as substance. The big money makers - Bay, Emmerich, Lucas - do not create great films. Some of them are great technicians, but they are not great film makers. They make Mc Movies for the summer blockbuster space. Last year also produced No Country For Old Men, There Will Be Blood and The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford, amongst many other quality films. These didn't make $100 million at the bock office because they actually take some effort on the part of the viewer, but they give back so much more than an empty vessel such as 10000 BC.

Mc Movies and Stupid Movies are so much easier to create. Hell, if Rob Schneider and Adam Sandler can keep making movies, then anybody can. You don't need a lot of skill or brains. Just recycle things that have been done before, and do them with less skill and more CGI. And never, ever, offer the audience anything new or slightly challenging.

  5. I believe this form of entertainment, motion pictures, will not last long beyond the 21st Century. With the emergence of interactive media and the internet, there will be something else to take it's place.

Batman, Hellboy II, Wall-E, Ironman, The Hulk, were all good movies this summer. Still have to check out The X-Files, etc. Saw an ad for The Watchmen. That looks great. Summer movies cost between $2.50 and $7.50 where I am. No excuse to not go see something. Heck, my friends have taken me for free on occasion! Stop watching stuff on the small screen. Video stores here charge as much for me to watch the movies on the TV as it costs me to go see it on a 100 foot screen with multiple surround sound systems. You don't like the crowds, right? Saw Batman in a theatre that was less than half full cause I went during the week at an afternoon show. Saw Harold and Kumar: Escape From Guantanamo Bay in an empty theatre. And that was a funny movie too. Oh yeah, that's out next week on satellite PPV if that is still your bent....

The only foreign film I WANT to see is Red Cliff. Unlikely to see it in a theatre though. Since we have only one major theatre chain and one 2nd run theatre chain, screens are limited. But there is a lot of crap out in other countries as well as stuff done by indie studios. I'm actually quite tired of the politico rant films, cheap Sci-Fi, crappy horror films (who their creators think are masterpieces), religious rant films, etc. that some people think are high art. Even channels like IFC are now full of them as they try to fill their day. It's a nice summer day. Time for a walk.

The following article from Home Media Magazine is an interesting shift of Hollywood's party line:

    http://www.homemediamagazine.com/news/html/breaking_article.cfm?article_id=13088

Hollywood is talking about rip and burn pirating as costing them billions. They used to talk about illegal downloads and camcorders in theaters and never mention PC software based ripping. It's the same blame game the music industry pulled when they started to tank. Which came first the chicken or the egg? Did music tank because of copying or crappy content?

My point is that with movies, just like music, the real culprit is the content itself. Music CD sales started to go to hell when rap and crap music came in. It all started with poor content. Movie content has now gone to hell. People will still buy "great" movies, they just won't buy crap movies.

I rent new releases every Tuesday for $1 and have for years. I can rent any title on Netflix for about the same. There are now fewer and fewer movies I am really interested in watching. It's the content! It's the content! How many good movies are released on DVD a month?

Get ready to be demonized you computer literate geeks. Hollywood needs a scapegoat for their shareholders.

  13. Actually disc sales are doing fine this year:

Most of what is released is crap but people have less money to spend at the theater so they are staying at home.
