    Hello everybody,

    I'm from Barcelona(Spain) and sorry, because I write badly enough in English, but will try to do it the best thing than it can .

    My opinion on SVCD format 480x576 is that it produces too much pixelation and blocks in film scenes with much action or many sprites,although we use a 2500 bitrate. (On the PC or small TV's the pixelation not note much, but in great TV's (29'',32''...) the pixelation and blocks are seen. And... i hate blocks i prefer less resolution and a clean image).

    I have decided on a format that eliminates the pixelation TOTALLY although it has less resolution:

    One is to codify the video in MPEG2 with a resolution of 352x288. This is ideal for TV films or TV series that are full screen (no black borders). (Full Screen without black borders in SVCD 480x576 would produce very many pixelation and appearance of blocks).

    For the films we can have 2 hours in 2 cd's with the advantage of being able to take advantage of the characteristics SVCD format like 2 tracks of audio.

    I tell you the configuration that I use with the CinemaCraftEncoder:

    For series of TV (Full Screen):
    -------------------------------
    Q = 20
    Quality Settings video = 0
    Video: CBR 2000

    approximately up to 50 minutes in 1 CD.

    For films DVD:
    --------------
    Q = 15(this value will vary depending on the duration of the film and the average of bitrate that we want)
    Quality Settings video = 25
    video = Video: VBR 1300-2000

    approximately up to 60 minutes in 1 CD.

    Advantages:
    -----------
    - Pixelation 0, blocks 0
    - Characteristics of SVCD format: 2 audio tracks.
    - No MPEG1 block movement in static scenes. (This is why i'm not trying to use XVCD).
    - There is less possibility of producing bitrate peaks (higher than 2600 value of standard SVCD).
    - Only 2 cd's for 120 minutes movies.

    Disadvantages:
    --------------
    Resolution: nonstandard 352x288 SVCD

    This format works in my PHILIPS-951, it would please me to know if it works in other DVD players.

    I hope to have explained well and that it is understood to me, greetings to all!

    Harlock.

    I created a svcd of 352x288. It played fine on my pc but failed to work on my dvd player. I know its a svcd 2.0 format as thats what my stand alone dvd player recognises it as. But plays it back all scrambled. dvd player is Amoisonic DVD 7000.
