Ripping a film that includes subtitles but only briefly

Hi and hello - my first post on what looks a very helpful site

My problem is

Backing up all my personal dvd films, had no problem using DVDdecrypter and Autogk so far until now

The film is 'The Hunt For Red October' which you may know has parts in it where the english speaking actors speak russian and english subs come up automatically- these are the only subtitles that show so i guess they are different to having the whole movie subtitled in....french (if you're french)

I'm having a difficult time converting the dvd to avi and including those parts of the film that subtitle automatically coming up - i would like the film to convert to avi and play like it does on a normal dvd (where subtitles aren't turned on but the automatic translation appears whenever they speak russian)

Any ideas?

Try DVDFab to backup movie with subtitles.

yeah that just seems to do the same as what i have used already - the preview always seems to be in czech

I am reasonably certain those are NOT subtitles, at least in the conventional sense. More like hard-coded subs. I forget what this is called.

They are called forced subtitles.

i'm giving up on this dvd i think (and i hate being beaten) in autogk it gives me option to add subs, there are 3 english versions, one is called wide

now i played the dvd in media player and went to subtitles and selected each of the 3 english subtitles in turn (they seem to be in the same order as on the autogk choices drop down box) - 2 of the choices gave me english subtitles throughout the film (even when they speak english) the last one 'English wide' only popped up english caption when they speak russian so i tried that in autogk

the sound i also have a choice of czech ac3 2 ch/german ac3 2ch/english ac3 6ch

so i chose english

now at the start when text comes on the screen with a brief plotline it comes up in english and for split second shows in german, then next line english and flashes in german again - its like the english and german intros play almost together - this dvd has me stumped

It sounds to me like you're decrypting incorrectly, among other things. You must be using DVD Decrypter in the default File Mode where you should be using IFO Mode (up at the top, Mode->IFO). It sounds like the DVD has angles where there are different languages for the intro and maybe the end credits. Go back and decrypt again, this time in IFO Mode, and choose one of the angles (English or German).

Your subtitle problem is a different one. Maybe it's one of the 3 you saw (the third, probably). Choose it and run the Preview in AutoGK to make sure. Or it has Forced Subs and they're contained within both of the first 2 sub streams. If that's the case, go into the Advanced Settings and check the Forced Subs box. But from your description it's the 3rd sub stream you want, and they aren't Forced Subs (meaning don't check the box). Run the Preview before encoding and make sure the one you choose is the one you want.

ah you may have something there manono - you are correct on the angles

now in ifo mode i have choice of angles 1, 2 or 3
13 chapters which i guess i keep all
and choice of 3 cells

not sure what to keep out of the angles & cells but i'm trying it now

ps my preview doesn't seem to work in autogk - its says please wait 'indexing' but it then disappears and nothing happens

Just choose one of the angles and leave the rest alone. Then play the part where that opening text is to make sure you chose the right angle.

I don't know why you can't do a Preview, but you can also open the IDX/SUB that AutoGK gives you in SubResynch (part of the VobSub package) or SubtitleCreator to see if it has the dialog you want. If there really are Forced Subs, they'll be marked as such in SubResynch. If I were you, I'd try the third stream of subs first, before looking for Forced Subs within the other 2 streams.

Sometimes it's easier to track down the subs you want first, and then choose them in AutoGK after figuring out which they are. You can use VobSub Configure (part of the VobSub package) to get all 3 streams at once, and then open them one at a time in SubResynch to try and figure which has the foreign language dialog you're looking for.

many thanks manono - i set a few different configurations running to convert to small avi's as a test and went out this morning - just come back and my first test one come up with the english subs only in the russian speaking parts, the title text at start of film is only in english and the actors are speaking english! now i'm re-running the conversion to a much higher file size for quality

Great help thanks once again i hadn't had any problem just using dvddecrypter on the file mode so far, must have just been a tricky dvd and what with the subtitles etc - the ifo mode was needed
