Good day all....newbie to this forum....
thanks for all the input and advice of the members here....read up on the LiteOn recorders for the past week or so, then purchased a Gateway AR-230 off of eBay for $24 plus shipping and managed to upgrade with hacked firmware to "turn it into" a LiteOn LVW-5001 (but with errors)...
The firmware upgrade changed my DDW-451S to a DDW-411S and the unit would no longer read discs...I went through some struggles but managed to remove the drive and reflash it to a LDW-451S and it worked....after I reversed the polarity of the driver drawer mechanism (it tried to open and close in reverse of what it should...)
In the end, all is successful, and I have a region-free, macrovision-free recorder with the 3-hour record option...

Thanks again for all your help.

Another way wpuld be to flash the original Gateway AR-230 over to an older flash version with the Macrovision turn off in the hidden menu (2-9-6-0). v1139 firmware can be flashed back on the recorder even if a newer version is installed. My luck was that I kept the original firmware, since Gateway no longer has the older firmware versions on their site. Now if only I know where to post it on the Internet.
