no sound using xp and hdtv

I have a new xp computer connected to a hdtv via a dvi-hdmi cable. The picture is perfect but i get no sound. I have a rca cable running from the sound output on the computer to the tv into the red and white sockets.

I had exactly the same setup on my old computer and i got sound perfeclty with the new computer i get no sound. i have installed and uninstalled and reinstalled the sound drivers got the latest versions but still no sound. Device manager looks fine.

I am able to get sound using headphones on the computer just not through the tv. The tv sound works because when watching tv it plays sound only through using the pc i get no sound.

I have just hooked up the old computer back using same cables same setp same settings on tv and i get sound but changing to the new computer no sound.

Can anyone help please?

What's the new computer brand/motherboard? If you've done as you described, it should have worked. I assume you mean you have two or stereo cables to the TV audio. A lot of new motherboards use 'jack sensing' to determine what's plugged into a audio jack. It may be misinterpreting the output. But this usually only happens on other than the computers 'line out' audio jack. (Sometimes the microphone or other jack is used for one of the surround sound output channels.)

The last thought is some computer output jacks don't interface correctly with all brands of stereo plugs. Sometimes their design is the problem, shorter or longer that usual. You could test this by using your headphones and connecting them at the end of the cable that plugs into the TV. You may need a female RCA to female 1/8" adapter to try this. Or try a different 1/8" to Stereo RCA adapter at the computer end, or at least compare the ends of your existing 1/8" plugs. And make sure the plugs are really fully inserted.

No offense meant, but ensure you are using the speaker out connection (there are typically several 1/8 mini connectors for other uses). Do you have speakers attached to your PC? Have you verified the sound is working on the PC itself?

yes like i said at the beginning krispy kitter i can get sound from the computer through headphones and i have also checked speakers. i am using the correct connection the green one.

i think the tv would need the cable plugged into "line" out not "speaker" out to work properly.

Since you have the video going into TV's HDMI it may be looking for the audio from that input as well.
You may have to dig around in your television menu options to tell it that HDMI video does not = HDMI audio.

They typically have "Line-In"...outputs are typically digital or speaker.

If the same output works for your headphones (you don't specifically say) and NOT to the TV, then the problem is your TV. As noted above, the TV may have to be configured to accept audio seperate from the HDMI input (you also don't state if the old PC used HDMI). You may also need to configure the PC audio output (if you play a video back and get a picture on the TV, can you hear the audio with your headphones?).

We are trying to help, but you haven't provided enough of the details. Such as exactly how each PC is connected and the name/model numbers of all the hardware involved.

Zinc, I have the same MB as you and am having the same exact problem. Any fix yet? My info for others.....Asus P5B-VM, PNY Geforce 9600 video card. Using a DVI on the computer to a HDMI on the TV (conversion cable). Using a 3.5 mm to rca adapter and rca cord to plasma TV for sound. I had the exact same setup prior to new MB and video card swap and it worked just fine. My old MB was ASUS also (p5Gz I believe). Headphones will work in the speaker jack and so will a set of computer speakers from my other pc. No sound using the adapter and rca's though. My friend who does IT for a living is completely stumped as am I. Any help? Thanks
