i know this is a stupid question but i've got a philips 3590h and can't seem to work out how to record straight to disc. i can record to the hard drive but not to disc i've looked in the instructions but can't find anything. if anyone could help me it would be much appreciated

There should be a button to select the DVD drive before you record to it. Might be one of the top ones, if remote is same or similar to 3575H. If like 3575, whatever drive you leave machine on is what it'll start up on next time, so if you don't see a timer rec going, make sure you're looking at HDD activity by pressing HDD button.

I just looked at your manual, it's on page 45, press HDD/LIST, cursor to the title you want and press the green button on your remote.

ok guys i managed to copy to disc but i can't seem to finalize the disc and how would i be able to record from sky+

I just looked in a EU 3595 manual and it looks as if you can only rec directly to DVD: (1) when setting a timer rec program, it'll be last option for "Recording Target", and (2) if using an external device, like a VCR... you press the CAM button, which gives you a choice between HDD, Optical Disc and Cancel (after a warning about clearing the time shift buffer).
