Ok I am new to forums so if I am doing this wrong, please, someone let me know.

I have been using DVD Decrypter and DVD shrink to back up my DVDs. Bought Rambo and want to back it up. Decrypter and shrink didnt work on this movie. I downloaded Ripit4me and have issues.

At 97% it starts inserting dummy sectors.....first time I have heard of this but, ok. I read about ripit4me having a way to set the path forFixVTS. Can't find how to set the path, but I did download it.

At 97% it takes FOREVER to insert the dummy sectors. I just want this to go as smooth as Decrypter and Shrink once did. Can anyone please help me?

Welcome to early 2007, when DVD Decrypter and RipItForMe were both finished off by da man. Neither of these haven't been updated is a long time, and neither handle the new copy protection variants in use today. Your choices are AnyDVD (payware) or DVDFab HD Decrypter (freeware), and you have to update them frequently to stay ahead of the changes the studios make with virtually every release.

When the DvdDecrypter part of RipIt4Me starts dragging like that, replacing every single sector with a blank one, hit the "Cancel" button (the big red button on the right, about half way down). In the dialog box that pops up, click the "Skip File" button. Then let the automatic processing continue until it's all done.

I do agree with guns1inger on this one. RipIt4Me is good for about 98% of DVDs today. If it start acting up like this, than you have one of 2% which need other ripper.
The percentage for RipIt is getting less and less since it was not updated for a long time now and never will be.

For a long time I resisted using DVDfabHDdecrypter. It's not nearly as flexible as, say, DVDDecrypter, it sometimes buggers navigation on ARccOS discs, it needs frequent updating for PSL2 files (protected sectors lists). So I used RipIt4Me, and for difficult discs manually generated PSL2 files, even learned how to manually identify and remove bogus data.

But I've given in. :wink: I just rip now with DVDfabHDdecrypter, full disc. (Don't trust it to reauthor movie only). Then open with DVDShrink to reauthor. DVDShrink is sensitive to incorrect structure, so it provides a useful check. If Shrink throws an error, run FixVTS on the ripped files from Fab then try Shrink again. Easy enough.

You don't have to. DVD43 + DVDShrink is all you need for the job. DVD43 is not updated often but so far handled every DVD I threw at it.
BTW, for the first time in my experience DVDfabHDdecrypter has passed over 1 of the 2 main titles on a DVD; Thinking of contacting the author at the club CD freaks forum.

I've used DVD43 before, and it was useful in conjunction with VobBlanker, for instance. Then VobBlanker was updated to disallow that. And DVD43 wasn't updated for as long as 1 1/2 years, that is, until the last few versions starting November '07. That put it seriously behind on latest protections. Now, if the updates continue more regularly, it'll be a practical option on an ongoing basis.

With DVD43, you don't want to run any other ripper at the same time, so best to disable automatic startup. There's a registry fix available for that.

As to DVDfabHDdecrypter, yeah, I repeat I don't trust it to make the correct selection for main movie only. :wink:

Hey Fritz, tried to run shrink, got an error. Ran FixVTS, still getting errors. Any suggestions?

Do you have the latest DVDFabHDDecrypter? It's updated frequently. Rambo came out on DVD at the end of last month. It's a Lionsgate release.

Once or twice I had to wait a few days for an update to deal with a new disc. It might have been Casino Royale, IIRC.

You could try a workaround using DVDDecrypter, suggested by ABond. This involves opening the DVD in IFO mode, identifying and deselecting the bad cells/chapters before ripping. Oftentimes it's the first and/or last cells that are bogus.

Another one is to use an old version of Shrink, v.2.3, and open the titleset directly, close the error window and continue, reauthor, then trim front and back using start/end frames. If Shrink can just be made to accept the rip, it will remap when backing up. Oh, and using that method you gotta recreate the VIDEO_TS.IFO, easily done with the old freeware DVDFab 0.17

But I should think that:

a) Something's physically wrong with the disc.

OR

b) You need an update to deal with it.

You could try DVD43, but the last update was April sometime.

Well I downloaded Defab and it came with Defab 5. I used the HD Decrypter. I got Rambo to work properly, just it copied at 58% quality and I know with DVD Shrink, if I could get it to work, I could get more quality out of it by adjusting the settings.

When you talked about recreating .Ifo and identify the bad cells, well I am puzzled. All I know about recreating DVDs is allow DVD Decyypter to rip it, shrink it with Shrink, adjust the settings to get the best quality, burn, and watch. Now that Decrypter is no good on the newer movies, I am stumped. So you see I am not too technical in this. Guess I need to dive deeper and learn all I can.

IFOs are, essentially, navigation. The VIDEO_TS.IFO is the main IFO. When I say open a titleset directly, I mean the IFO for the main movie, usually something like: VTS_01_0.IFO. So going that route, you need to re-create the VIDEO_TS.IFO or video manager.

No matter. Just use Fab and keep it updated if you don't want to delve any further into this subject. :P

For better quality, here's what you could do: Rip full disc with DVDFabHDDecrypter. Reauthor main movie only with Shrink, deselecting unwanted audio streams. Back up with NO compression. That's zero, no compression. Then re-encode with DVDRebuilder, rather than transcode with Shrink. It's freeware.
