  1. Hi , I have some compressed videos that are divx , and I want to be able to mute or edit out audio potions of the video for example coarse language words without cutting out the video, and without having to recode the video again after editing. Can anyone recommend a video editing program for windows xp that will allow me to do this. The editing program can be either freeware or commercial as long as it does what I want fast and easy as I am new to this.

Also I would like to be able to do the same with vob video files as well.

    Thanks in advance.

For AVI files with MP3 audio, I would

Demux the audio with Virtuldubmod (Streams -> Stream List)
Mute the sectiosn you want to hide in Audacity
    Export as MP3
    Remux with with Virtualdubmod

For VOBs/DVD Structures it is a lot harder

  3. Thanks guns1inger I will give it a try. Will this method avoid having to recode the video? As I want to keep the video quality without recoding.
Also is there any consumer friendly programs that will allow me to see the video while I edit the sound. This will help me to pinpoint the locations better that I want to mute.

    But of course.

Keep in mind that such applications have been declared illegal in the
actual democratic countries. You have been warned.

Most of the commercial audio editors will do it - Sound Forge, Audition etc, but then you could also use an editor to do it as well. You can probably do it in Reaper if you import your video onto a track, then cut the audio up when you want to alter the volume, but it can be bit laggy. You will still have to export the audio and mux it into the video afterwards though.

In case of mp3 audio, there are chances to avoid re-encoding audio using mp3DirectCut.

  7. Thanks for the suggestions guns1inger. I have downloaded Virtualdubmod and Audacity and will give it a try. I do own Audition 1.5 and am quite familiar with it.

Also mp3DirectCut is a nice suggestion for audio files Alex_ander.
