Okay, here we go again. I already read some topics about my problems, but I couldn't found the answers yet. Therefore, as a newbie, I ask again and hope that you guys can help me.

I've downloaded ffmpeg and followed the instructions about the binaries. I've read the 'how to do' to make a DVD with selectable subtitles. Still, the encoding video (DVD) has no audio and the subtitles are missing and I don't know how to make it work. I've got the option Keep Elementary Streams unchecked. I read somewhere that it could be it. Further, when I open an AVI, the source format in the Summary tab says 'Unrecognized'. Could that be the problem?
In the filters tab, I chose the option Load subs for my subtitle (srt) and brought the pos tot 95. Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong? It's strangs, because the first time I encoded a video, it was good

    Thanx!

Try removing the spaces from your pathname and see what happens. Mpeg2enc + mplayer is a combination that often barfs if there are special characters in the pathname.

The log shows it converted the audio and subtitles, so this isn't all that clear yet.

Maybe that is related to the "WARN: audio sector out of range" message in the log, not sure. How did you check that the audio is missing: Did you burn a disc and play in a set top player or did you play the VIDEO_TS folder in VLC or Apple DVD Player?

The subtitles are "off" by default. Use the subtitle button on your remote or the subtitle feature in a software player to turn them on.

No. Keeping the elemetary stream could help diagnose the issue, as it would allow you to check the individual .m2v and .ac3 streams. "Keep Elementary Streams" unchecked is just automated house-cleaning, by deleting temporary files.

That shouldn't happen with a DivX/XviD AVI. And the log show it converted 'okay' anyway. So that is weird, but as of yet not a sign for your issue.

    Seems fine.

P.S. You should set the "Set 3:2" checkbox (i.e. set a 3:2 pulldown) in the Options tab, because you're creating a progressive, NTSC Film framerate (23.976 fps) DVD. The log has a line that suggests you didn't set that. The lack of a pulldown on DVDs with that framerate may result in video stutter (or perhaps even missing audio) on some set top players.

Okay, I've encoded it again with the Set 3:2 on. But the same results. The subtitles are working. There weren't showed in the Mplayer, but in VLC it works. Only not the audio. I also think the problem is "WARN: audio sector out of range". But how can I fix this? I hope you or somebody else can help me.

Yes, I also rather doubt that the spaces are the problem, but it certainly wouldn't hurt to remove them (and it occasionally helps).

Could it be that the pcm format is causing the trouble here?

Since you've apparently gotten everything except audio to work, here's a "hail Mary" thing to try. Use MpegStreamclip to export the audio as, say, MP2. Then mux that with the video you've already got, and author the combination (with subtitles). This might be easier to do than to debug why ffmpegx is choking. At least it's a quick experiment, so even if it doesn't work, you haven't lost much time. And since you are only exporting the audio portion, you do not need to have the QT MPEG2 component installed to use MpegStreamclip this way.

I've used MpegStreamclip to make a MP2 file. Goes fine. There is the audio. But where do I have to mux it? I've done it with ffmpeg. I unchecked 'Encode audio' and have 'add audio' the mp2 file. After encoding, the ac3 was still made :S and the audio still didn't work. First question is; do I have to mux in ffmpeg or MpegStreamclip. And second: how do I mux?

Muxing with ffmpegX: Go to the Tools tab; go to the Mux sub-tab. Load video; load audio. Uncheck "author". Mux.
Go to the Author tab. Load .mpg; load .srt. Author.

Thank both of you for your help. Unfortunately...... the last step. It didn't work The mux with the load video and audio went well. I checked it in VLC and the audio did it. Now I went to the Author tab and loaded the mpg and srt file and clicked on Author. Now I get the error message: 'AppleScript Error. The variable _videoinfo is not defined. (-2753)'

Can this come because I still set the Target format on DVD mpeg2enc? Have I got to set this option on something else? I also haven't try the DVD ffmpeg yet. This because you couldn't set the position of the subtitle. Therefore, I used DVD mpeg2enc. But now I'm doing this with the tools tab, so this isn't necessary anymore.

I also thought the error comes because I had set the srt already in the filters tab and afterwards also added it on the tools tab -> author tab. Could this also be the problem that I get this error?

I'm not sure what you're asking; sorry. I've been assuming that you have already produced, by some means, a DVD-compliant, video-only (m2v) stream, and a DVD-compliant, audio-only (mp2) stream [nb, strictly speaking mp2 is not guaranteed to be compliant with US-made players, but I have yet to encounter one that won't work with it]. These two elementary streams are then muxed together using ffmpegx's tools (for example) to create a DVD-compliant mpg program stream. Then you author with that and the .srt subtitle file as DVD. In the muxing and authoring steps, there's no involvement by encoding engines, such as mpeg2enc. The encoding is already done *prior* to the muxing and authoring stages.

I obviously am not understanding your question, so could you provide a more step-by-step description of precisely what you're doing, and what the results are at each step, so that someone here can help diagnose where your problem lies?

    Okay, I will do that.

I have encoded the video in ffmpeg with DVD mpeg2enc. I get the video file m2v.
Than I encoded the audio in MpegStreamclip to MP2.
    This goes fine.

Then I mux the video en audio files with ffmpeg under the Tools tab - mux tab.
After that, I went to the Tools tab - author tab. There I put the made mpg (mux) and the srt file. Then I click on author and the I get the error...

    Aloha!

I've taken other movie and this movie encoded just well. I think that the previous movie just wasn't a good one. However, I have a question again

When I burn my movie, it only uses (say) 2 gb. Is there a way to use the full DVD with 4,7gb?

Thanks already for the people how helped me the last days!

Total filesize is proportional to movie duration, and bitrate (just as the total distance traveled is proportional to the time you travel, as well as to the speed with which you are traveling). If you feel that quality is suffering because of insufficient bitrate, then increase the bitrate. Ffmpegx will select a default rate, but you can always override its selection with one of your choosing. If the bitrate is shown in green, then ffmpegx believes that the bitrate is a good one. If it's in blue, it means that ffmpegx believes that you have selected an unnecessarily high bitrate. And if in red, it means that bitrate is indeed too low.

Just be aware that higher bitrate does not always mean noticeably better quality. Also, excessively high bitrates can cause problems for some players.
