I have been given a DVD that is the result of a friend transferring a VHS tape home movie.

The DVD is an hour long and ultimately what I want to do is rip it, clean it up a little, slice it up into chapters, and burn the new version to DVD with as little loss of quality as possible.

I am a complete novice doing this, and so have encountered my first problem. I downloaded DVD Decrypter (was this the right package for an unencrypted disc) and ripped the DVD in file mode I think. This leaves my with 6 VOB files, 2 BUP files and 2 ISO files.

None of that means much to me, so I need to know assuming I'm on the right track so far how I put these files back together in a format that allows me to watch the movie from my HDD, and hopefully edit in Win movie maker, or clean up with another prog.

I'm in the UK so if it makes a difference I'm assuming this is all related to PAL not NTSC. Also I only want to use freely available programs, and hopefully as few as possible.

    Thanks

Use VOB2MPG and you might be able to edit the mpg directly in windows movie maker if you a mpeg2 decoder.

Thanks that has worked and I can watch the saved .mpg version of the movie...

However when I try and import it into Windows Movie Maker it says...

.mpg could not be imported. An interface has too many events to fire from
