  1. I have got the hang of ripping DVD's and making VCD's. However, to improve the reliability, is there a CD-R particular dye grade which will improve the reliability? Also does the write speed play any role to the reliability of the finished product?

When writing at x24 the movies seem to jerk towards the end of the CD (sometimes the sound goes ahead or behind of the visuals), i have not found this on a lower speed burn - is this a rule lower speed the better the results? The recording buffer stays around 97% but occasionally dips to 80% for a split second - will this effect? I use Nero Burner to author VCD's.

  2. I can't guarntee you that the high speed is the problem, all my movies I burn at 16x using a CDR which has a dye of Gold+Silver (high quality) and i've had no problems yet.

I do know that the CDR is the main aspect of problems regarding playback and the compatibility, including the compatibility in burning.

  3. I believe in the equal liberium, The silver, or gold cd color could be the highest quality for data back up. I have run several test though on cds. I used four different dvd players for this test: RCA, Sony, Toshiba, and Apex. I used Memorex, Imation, Verbatium, and Fugi. (I apologize for the bad grammer.) I first tried, the golden disc first.. Verbatium, Imation, and Memorex (It played only on Apex, and certain RCA's). I then tried a green disc, Fugi. It played on RCA, Apex, and Toshiba. I then tried the Blue style of disc from Verbatium. It did not read on anything thus far. My Sony is just crap! I would suggest Fugi. As for your cd burner speed, I have no problems with errors. One thing to look for is the max recording speed. You can cause the information to smear, on the disc from so much heat, and the high rpm's.

  4. I'd second that emotion regarding Fuji media, they are among the best! but i'd strongly suggest using a Gold or Silver dye CDR media.

  6. I'd recommend www.121cdr.co.uk - a shop with loads of different dye CD-R's.

  7. Yes I own a Sony 360 DVD player, here's my post from the DVD Players Compatibility List from this site. Find one that works and stock-up because sometimes the companies will change their dyes/reflective layers.

My many MANY experiments in burning VCD movies (from a Canadian perspective) yielded these conclusions for the Sony DVP-S360...

What brands DID worked for me:

    1) Acer Multi-Speed 74 Min. (Silver Top)

    2) Gigastorage CD-Rs:
    -Gigastorage 80 Min. (Purple lettering)
    -Cursor 80 Min. (Silver-Top)
-Cursor Colorful 80 Min (Multi-colored Top) works but there's a 20% chance for errors.
[Note: the new Gigastorage 80 min. CD-R 24x (Black lettering) doesnot work anymore ]

    3) Memorex (I bought two Spindles at different times, one worked and the other didn't...go figure!)

    4) Almost all CD-RWs

    [Note: Princo CD-R works also]

    (None worked for SVCDs)

    ------------------------------------------------------

What brands did NOT work for me:

    BASF
    DataWare
    Kodak
    Maxell
    Memorex Black
    Ricoh
    Samsung
    Sony
    Verbatim
    Zenith
