  1. My dad has SKY and wants FreesatHD in another room - he can get a 2nd line run from the sat dish but will it need a new LnB or does the SKY standard LnB support two lines?

also - which is a good FreesatHD box to get specifically for best upscaling capabilities of non-HD channels , humax..? not particularly bothered about the new PVRs so just the basic HD box with good upscaling...

    thanks

    You need a Twin LNBF.

There are many HD DVB S2 receivers in Europe and most of them have indeed good upscaling. But don't expect miracles. And I don't think you have those options there in Britain.
Better choose one official FreeSat reciever.

be any good to him? (for DIY)

would it work with SKY - running one cable to SKY box in one room and one cable to Freesat in other?

    Yes and no.
This photo shows one twin LNBF, a power line amplifier and a cable.

The correct installation needs 2 lines (cables) from the roof's satellite antenna heading separately to each receiver at each room.
And you need a second Receiver to receive Astra 2 at 28.2 East (Freesat). Any DVB S2 receiver can recieve those broadcasts and all have upscaling to 720p and 1080i. But, as also happens with the DVD players, the good upscaling only few really have.

There are plenty DVB S2 recievers to search for, outside the official Freesat ones. Dreambox, Kathrein, ABsat, QBox, DarkBox ,Sab, Force, Humax, Topfield... and countless others!

You need to ask to a dedicated for satellite reception forum for all this in detail.

  5. i thought he would be able to run the 2 cables from that LnB as its a twin?

fit the LnB to current SKY dish replacing one in and then run second cable to freesat STB and connecting the SKY cable into the LnB also... that not be done with that?
