Is there documentation detailing the structure of a sub file?

If not, does any one know if the bitmaps inside the sub file are full frame (e.g. 720x480 for NTSC), or they are clipped,
that is each bitmap only contains the text area of the subtitle?

You can have a look at SubtitleCreator code. The bitmap can be of any size up to full frame. Each subpic has its own X position Y position Width and Height.
