  1. since a read so many post about avi capture quality
    i want to try avi ( it's a brain wash ! ) , but want to
keep mmc7.1 ( problem and time saving )

i want to compare the result with my direct vcd and
    svcd capture

i"m searching for the best format to transfer from
to go to Vcd and Svcd

lsxmp3.5 is bugging about my ati avi capture and
tmpgenc!! is creating audio sync problem with my
    capture conversion

    witch avi codec the best

UYVY (native ) is these size aprorpriate:
    YUY2 400x300 goto vcd
    h261 640x480 goto Svcd
    mpeg4v1
    ...
    ...

    thanks

  2. If you wan't to capture AVI, I would suggest installing the Huffyuv codec and use that instead of the ones you listed and use VirtualDub instead of MMC 7.1.

Better yet, instead of AVI, do an MPEG capture using MMC 7.1. Create a MPEG-1/2 capture profile using I-Frames only at 640x480. The results are a good as capturing with AVI, and you use a lot less disk space.

Use TMPGEnc to encode to VCD or SVCD.

  3. ok thanks
    i will try mpeg2 i frame

but where to find huffyuv Avi ?

and i presume you capture mpeg2 i frame and then convert to
Svcd ( tmpgenc ) . is it look better than direct Svcd capture

    thanks

Hey I have a question on this. It sounds good to me to try, I also wonder what the outcome looks like as well as what bit rate should it be set to, like 3 o4 m/sec or what.?

    Thanks....

What is your computer spec for capturing at 640 X 480? What is your setting for MMC 7.1? I didn't like 7.5 version, so I switched back to 7.1.

My spec: Athlon 1 ghz, 768 RAM, 40 GB ATA-100 HD, ATI AIW 128 AGP, Window XP.

I can only capture at 352 X240. Any other setting, I would drop frame like crazy. (mpeg 1 /2).

  6. I have a PIII 800 with 256MB SDRAM with a 40GB 7200rpm HD.

If you are capturing I-Frames only, crank the bitrate up as far as you can. I capture at 640x480 @ 15Mbps and use about 85-90% CPU.

I can't get good 640x480 AVI captures with MMC 7.1, even with Huffyuv. I can though with VirtualDub, but the files are about 8x bigger than an MPEG I-Frame only capture. The quality is about the same from what I can see.

Encoding P and B frames, and motion estimation requires a lot of CPU and even more memory bandwidth. If you don't have DDR memory, you aren't going to be able to encode P and B frames at higher resolutions. I-Frame Only encoding uses a lot less memory bandwidth, and requires a lot less disk I/O.

Use MPEG-1 if you want VirtualDub to frameserve your capture to TMPGEnc.
