    I want to use Virtualdubmod.
I've installed the Panasonic Video Codec.

When I load the DV video into Virtualdubmod: it reports an error saying "[!] AVI: Type-1 DV file detected -- VirtualDub cannot extract audio from this
    type of interleaved stream."

I didn't realise that I needed anything else installed?

    What am I doing wrong...?

    Thanks.

  2. It seems thjat Virtualdubmod cannot handle Type-1 DV AVI files. This type is used by DirectShow-based programs. Older Video for Windows programs can only use Type-2 DV AVIs.

You either need to capture your DV video directly to Type-2 (WinDV allows this as does our software) or convert your existing Type-1 files to Type-2. You can use this:

    https://www.videohelp.com/tools/DV_Type_1_to_DV_Type_2_Converter

(I edited this because my original recommendation won't work on an Athlon XP3200 CPU.)

Use the Canopus DV File Converter to convert to Type-II.

If you used WinDV to transfer the video, there's a setting to change what type is transfered. Not sure about any other transfer software.

erm... ok... i suppose i could do this.
but: i've never had any trouble before now!
i've got a new machine (xp) that i've rebuilt.
and have installed everything from new.
rather than do that: can i maybe upgrade the windows video file settings or something??

Well, based you having a new computer, even if you are using the same software, what happened "before" is pretty irrelevant. There's probably a setting in your transfer software that you need to check or change.

What did you use to transfer the DV to your computer? Chances are, as I mentioned about WinDV, there a setting you need to change to "Type-II".

Either make the correct setting in the transfer SW, or convert as outlined above.

Newer versions of VirtualDub can accept DV Type 1, but not VD Mod. However converting it to type 2 is lossless. Some MPEG encoders can only use Type 2 also, so it's just easier to capture (transfer) to that format in the first place.
