I am looking to buy one tomorrow, and was wondering if you 1080P owners are happy with it.

How is the AVI playback using a USB memory stick?

Lastly, I am wondering if you had any success getting it to be region-free? The quote below is rather discouraging.

comment, the hack above doesn't work with the firmware version 090128.00.B.1080P9XEG that is currently shipping with these units. https://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks/samsung-dvd-1080p9/10025
    Thanks.

Edit Note: This topic used to be more focused the DVD-1080P's firmware and region-free capabilities.

Welcome to the forums, but posting in all highlights is very bad form here. Please don't do that again.

Reports we have are that ZERO Samsung DVD players can be made region free. Samsung deliberately does not make firmware available for most of its electronics. They are either trying to drive you towards official repair shops for these things or they are afraid you'll brick your equipment by doing it yourself. Install earlier firmware versions at your own risk with the knowledge that Samsung could have made hardware changes you don't know about since the earlier versions of the firmware and installing an older version could brick your player. I'm not saying it will happen, I'm just saying I can't rule it out.

While I have a Samsung HDTV and I love it, I wouldn't touch one of their DVD players because they are region free hostile and may not (I'm guessing here) play PAL DVDs at all, even region free discs. Therefore I cannot answer your playback questions.

I myself would lean towards Panasonic BD35 - BD60 - BD80 They are DVD Region FREE and Fixed Region for Blue Ray unless you purchase a Kit $185.00 AU to play Blue Ray Regions A - B - C. Panasonic would be a better buy.

  5. Get a Pioneer DV-410. I picked one up for less than $30 on ebay. There's a firmware update at PioneerFAQ that adds a lot of stuff the original firmware doesn't have and makes it region free. I ended up going back to the original firmware though because every time I put a PAL disc in it the screen goes blank and the player has to be reset. After installing the modded firmware you can go back to the OF and the player is still region free and will play PAL discs. Both firmwares are on the PioneerFAQ site.
