When converting an AVI AC3 file to play on my DVD player (MPG2 and AC3 formatted DVD) I've noticed that the right speaker and the center speaker are swapped around.

This has happened to 6 or so different episodes so I've temporarily swapped the cables around to solve but anyone else aware of such an issue?

  2. What software did you use to do the conversion?

I think the table below might explain something:

    Very-good question.

If the AVI had the original AC3 audio, and you encoded the video and used the source audio, then there will be no change.

I suspect that you have either used a crap program to do the conversion, or more likely had AAC audio in the source. I have seen several programs struggle to correctly map 6 channel AAC to 5.1 AC3, with centre and right or centre and left swapping being the most common problem. Earlier versions of FAVC (up to 1.4) had this problem. I don't know if it has been fixed since then.

Thanks for your help folks. Sorry I posted that VERY late last night and thought I posted it in the ffmpegx thread. (any possibility it could be moved?)

That table is very helpful Midzuki though ffmpegx recognises that the file is AC3.

Maybe it's more down to the DTS and AC3 getting 'confused' in the Prologic II DVD player (JVC TH-S33) ?? Is there an app that can repair the mix up or will I literally have to swap cables each time?

If the audio has been encoded properly then you won't have this issue. Something is wrong with the audio stream. Fix that instead. It may mean demuxing back to mono wavs and rebuilding it.
