  1. Problem - Tried burning 2 different Hi8 captures and both have problems. 1st one burns fine then hangs up 2 seconds into play in all 3 of my DVD players (Sony standalone, Pioneer DVD recorder, Toshiba laptop DVD player). 2nd video hangs up in the processing of DVD files when I'm creating my folder of DVD content with DVDlab Pro. Gives me an error in .vob (vob #2).

The process I'm using - Capture directly from my Hi8 camcorder to my Pioneer DVD recorder then finalize. Rip the DVD using DVD Decrypter. Convert the .vob files to mpeg using vob2mpeg, edit content using VideoReDo, author using DVDLab Pro, burn using DVDshrink.

The capture and Rip seem to be working fine, and the mpeg that vob2mpeg produces doesnt give me any errors before or after I edit it using VideoReDo. I've tried demultiplexing the video during the import process to DVDlab pro, as well as letting the process DVD do that after I author the menus of the DVD. DVDShrink doesnt have to compress any of the content as the files are only using about 90% of the DVD space.

My guess is that the problem lies somewhere in the DVD processing in DVDlab Pro, but I cant narrow it down. DVDlab Pro gives me no errors when it demultiplexes and creates the new video and audio stream files.

I have used both Memorex 4x DVD-R's and Verbatim 16x DVD-R's, same result with both.

DVD Shrink doesn't burn by itself - it uses either DVD Decrypter, Nero or CopytoDVD to do the actual burning (there is also a version available that recognises imgburn). If you don't need to actually reduce the size, using Shrink is just a waste of time.

Use imgburn in build mode. Select the video_ts folder, and it will work out the rest for you.

Before you do, have you tested the DVD on your HDD before you burn ?

Also, use PGCDemux or DGIndex or Rejig to demux your assets before loading up DLP. It works much better if you give it elementary streams to begin with.

Can I ask what may be a dumb question? If you playback your HI8 tape into your DVD recorder and then finalize it, why would you do all the rest of the stuff? Once you have finalized it, you have it on DVD already. It is done. Why do the rest?
    What am I missing?

Thats good to know. Still new at this, probably overcomplicating things at this point.

Strictly for editing, and to improve the menus. My philips DVD recorder (I think I said pioneer the first time) does a good job of capturing, but creating chapters is terrible.

Nero came with the dvd recorder but I'm not a big fan of it. I'm going to try those other programs you guys listed and give them a shot. Thanks for the info.

That recently became a problem. I think I have software issue on my computer that is preventing me from playing DVD's on my laptop, from disc or HDD. I dont think its related to my problem w/ burning the home videos though as I can "backup" other DVD's without a problem.

I my experience, problems in one area are often an indication of problems in related areas. try Media Player Classic. It is a single executable, and has it's own mpeg2 decoder for DVD playback. If that fails then you have real problems.

I was able to get the dvd content fired up within the hard drive directory using VideoLan VLC and it ran fine. I going to give the burn another shot this evening using Nero this time. Maybe my foul up was using DVD shrink when I wasnt actually shrinking anything. I appreciate the help.
