Hi,
I built a brand new system yesturday, AMD 64 x2, AMD 4800 processor, 2 gigs ram, Geforce 8400 GS card, from a Athlon 1800, 2 gig ram, Geforce 5200 card.
I'm running Windows XP pro software 32 bit, my computers speed has tripled and performance is fantastic !!
But I was wondering if there's any advantage, upgrading to Windows Vista 32 or 64 bit OS ?? As far as video editing speeds & performance.
Has anyone noticed a difference, changing operating systems ??
Thanks for all replies

XP64 will only boost your performance if you throw in more than 4GB of RAM and your apps are written specifically for 64Bit operation. It's a pain to get certain codecs working in 64 - Quicktime is a PITA.
Vista is no faster and in some cases slower than XP.
I'd stay with XP32 if I were you. Sounds like you're happy. Don't fix it if it isn't broke! -
Thanks, just thought since there was a major improvement in processing speeds, maybe Vista OS performs better then XP. I know most softwares are 32 bit, but thought maybe a better operating system, would perform better even with 32 bit software. Vista 32 bit, performing better then XP, and 64bit even better. Just a thought, thanks for reply.

Everything will be slower with Vista, especially if you run it "as is" and not tweaked. It consumes much more memory than XP with default settings, because of many unecessary services. Even a super tweaked Vista feels sluggish compared to a super tweaked XP. Futhermore, many programs, drivers and codecs (still after >1 year) have compatibility problems with Vista
64bit vs. 32bit - as Soupafresh said, only if you use more than 4GB ram. Furthermore, still many incompatibilities with programs optimized for 32bit legacy systems. -
Vista 32 won't give you any benefit.
My personal experience with apps like Vegas on both is that Vista *isn't* the slow poke it's made out to be and, on a *good* hardware platform, it doesn't suffer the incompatibilities either. Perhaps that is because I don't use old software that hasn't been maintained for a long time.
But there's no compelling reason to change what obviously works well for you.
64-bit can help you with 32-bit apps if you do a lot of multitasking with resource hungry apps. e.g., running Vegas, doing photo editing with Photoshop, may be another instance of Vegas (since you can copy and paste between instances).
Slowly but surely, though, major apps will become available as 64-bit (e.g., Sony have indicated 64-bit Vegas "later" this year). And some of these may only run on Vista since that's where the majority of the 64-bit Windows base will be. -
If your install of XP works - keep it! I'd fall back to XP Pro in a minute if it were an option (running Vista). The main benefit of running Vista is the vast knowledge that I've gained trying to sort it out.

second and third the xp route, it is stable, and I believe I saw Microsoft say they will support until 2014.
PAL/NTSC problem solver.

Microsoft will still allow XP to be sold, till june of this year. I think they will still do patches till either 2012 or as victoriabears said 2014. I dont remember the exact news article.
