I am using Adobe Premiere CS3 to capture video from my Mini-DV camera. I am feeding old BetaMax tapes through the AV port on the camera. This works flawlessly via WinDV or MovieMaker.

I want to do this via CS3 but half the time it doesnt see the camera, or when it does I only get sound and no video overlay. When it finally sees both which is rare, it captures then after a 30m or 60m wait it just stops capturing. No errors, just stops. The video is still playing in the preview window. no dropped packets.

I am using a JVC GR-D94U camera via the Firewire port.

PC is Windows XP, AMD 64 3500+ with 2Gb DDR400. Two 160Gb SATA drives.

I have all the patches for CS3 installed.

I just installed Vista Ultimate on my computer. How well will CS3 stuff run on Vista?

Premiere has never been good for capture.

Use WinDV to capture, save the DV AVI on your hard drive. Then import it into Premiere. That's the only good way. Premiere CS3 is a resource hog, and it could cause dropped frames. WinDV is a lightweight tool, it won't cause frame drops.

I found Windows MovieMaker does a good job of importing and exporting back to DV.

Does anyone know how to get the color adjustments for the OVERLAY to work in Vista?

In XP I had the option to adjust the Gamma, brightness and etc so my outputs in VirtualDub and CS3 looked as close to the TV as possible. Once I went to vista none of the Nvidia drivers has this option anymore.

    Thanks!!

I dumped Adobe Premiere CS3 and am currently trying out EDIUS 4.5.

So far it is SO much better. More reliable, actually does what it says it will.

I had high hopes for CS3.

Overlay adjustments are part of the display card driver. Nothing to do with OS or editing software. The driver does need to support Vista however.

    Note this:
When you are adjusting overlay you aren't adjusting video. Overlay adjustments only affect the display monitor.

I've tried all the top NLE programs and free DV capturing programs.

So far the only one that captures 100% of the time with no errors and no dropped frames is Windows Movie Maker which is a total shock to me.

I now do all captures with WMM and do all my editing with MEP 11 Plus. (even MEP's capture was terrible).

    Thanks!

PS I'm back to XP where I belong too.
