CORRECTION:
A couple of the AVI files opened 5 minutes after I dropped them into QT! What's cooking? -
Make sure you have the Perian plugin (www.perian.org). That usually permits you to open such AVI files as it contains the code for DivX and Xvid viewing. These codecs then permit Toast (which uses QT to open the files) to work with the AVI so it may then convert it over to MPEG2 for burning to a video DVD.
QT's ability to work with "foreign" formats is spotty; this is why Perian is so useful.
Also the A52 component is useful for working with AC3 source audio. It might not be necessary (and if your AVI's audio plays well once Perian is installed you probably don't need it).
