i have downloaded some movies (legal download) and i want to burn them on a disc. i get them burned but they only play on computer and i want to play them on my dvd player. i have tried all types of programs - ashampoo, media player, but can't figure it out.

Start by identifying what you have. G-Spot or MediaInfo can tell you what they are encoded with.
If you want to convert them to DVD format so they play on all (within reason) DVD players, I would recommend FAVC or DVD Flick. Both are free, good quality and pretty reliable with most formats. Burn the results with Imgburn in Build Mode by selecting the Video_TS folder produced by whichever tool you decide to use.
If the files are encoded with Divx/Xvid then they will probably play on a Divx capable player, in which case you should be able to burn them as data using Imburn in Build Mode.Read my blog here.
