On Wal-mart's website it claims this player can play NTSC and PAL... however someone gave it a review stating that it doesn't really play PAL and that it says so in the manual.

Does anyone know if this is true and if so, does anyone know of a region unlock code?

According to the Sony manual, no, NTSC only. http://www.sonystyle.com/wcsstore/SonyStyleStorefrontAssetStore/pdf/DVPNS57P.pdf

Sony's in general are difficult to change to region free also. (That's different than PAL/NTSC.)

    Thanks for the info.

I thought I had remembered reading on here that Sony's are hard to unlock. Unfortunately of all the DVD players I own/ have owned none have ever been able to be unlocked. Sanyo and Samsung are the other brands I wasn't able to find any codes for.

I bought this player today specifically because Walmart said it could do PAL. I have a small collection of PAL discs and have up to now played them on my computer because I don't have issues with region, pal/ntsc and so forth. But my computer dvd drive is having trouble reading (may really need to be cleaned and/or replaced) and I wanted something to play PAL and other disks. My Toshiba recorder is beginning not to be able to play any DVDs, so I thought it was time to purchase a replacement.

I like the price, but saying it will play PAL when it can't is false advertising. I just might go ahead and exchange it.

When I try to put in a PAL disc I get an error message that the disc can't be played because it is the incorrect region - not that it is a PAL disc. I've looked for unlock codes but I'm not about to try them - it seems to me that region codes are a different thing than PAL vs NTSC.

Never listen to any WALLY WORLD people because they don't know anything. As far as I know SONY DVD Players could never playback PAL discs unless you're in the UK or Japan.

If you want a DVD PLAYER that can playback PAL discs buy a PHILIPS DVD PLAYER.
