Not sure if this belongs here. The problem I am having is this: I have numerous copies that I made using DVD Decripter and DVD shrink on Dynex DVD -R disks. The disks have been skipping on my Sony DVD player (as were some Sony DVD -R disks) so I decided to copy them onto Ridata DVD -Rs. The Sony DVDs were read by DVD Decriptor and copied successfully. However, when I insert the Dynex DVD -R disks, the DVD drive does not recognize them. Any idea why this would happen?

A quick scan through our media database would indicate that most Dynex -R media is crap, although the +R seems to fair better.

    Try using Verbatims instead.

I confused as to why they will play on my DVD player but not be recognized on the PC. I know that they are crap and am trying to copy them onto better media.

If your DVD burner doesn't know what you're feeding it, how is it to know what to do? To put it simply, I'd say your burner's firmware isn't programmed w/ the particular code that the "Dynex" media uses. A few possible workarounds: see if there's a firemware update for the burner which may/may not include the code, or you can hack it in yourself w/ Media Code Speed Edit, I believe. The former being a bit less dangerous that the latter, but both equally bad, if you don't know what you're doing, or the PC crashes or something.

Personally, I'd just find another reader/burner if possible (beg/borrow/steal/whatever - hey a new burner costs ~$30, readers slightly less), otherwise forget about it. If you have any more of the media, throw it away.

If you are trying to copy them to better media, why on earth are you using RiData ? I guess 'better' is a relative term.

Take them to a friend's house and see if he/she can read them.

Go to http://www.nomorecoasters.com and read up on media quality. It DOES make a difference. I have a friend who every now and then sends me DVDs he's made of old TV stuff from the 60s that's not available anywhere on DVD or VHS. He asks me to make a copy of the DVD and give it to my brother as well. My friend uses CMC made DVD-R discs, and they are horrible. He puts labels on them so I don't know what name they are sold under, but they are just always awful. I have all kinds of read problems, bad sectors, and so on when I try to copy the discs.

RiData and Dynex are both bad. Sony DVDs were good at one time (they used to use one of the very best manufacturers for their media), but they have now outsourced almost everything to other companies and the quality is much worse. The Sony DVD-R discs that you have may be some of the old good ones.

I unfortunately bought some +R of this media and its horrible, 2 of my 3 dvd burners didn't work with it. Also it seems they rapidly developed bad spots from normal storage. If its not Verbatim I'd say forget about using it.

All of the comments about the quality of your media are probably true.

Nonetheless there may be one or more other problems other than your media.

You have not told us what manufacturer's burner you have or its model number.

A simple reason your burner might not recognize DVD-R blanks is that it is an old DVD+R burner. Since you have provided minimal information we can't say for sure, but if the size of your hard drive is an indicator your system and probably your burner have some age.

Although updating the firmware on your burner is generally a good idea, I don't think it will cure not recognizing the media.

Some older SONY players sputter and choke on most burned media, and higher quality media is often an adequate band-aid.

Are you using a NEC burner? See http://club.cdfreaks.com/f86/nec-optiarc-dvd-r-reading-problems-209168/ for details on a common affliction for NEC drives for which these problems is wide spread but has been reported much more rarely with other drive brands.

It's a good thing that your computer didn't recognize Dynex media: it's trying to take care of you. That stuff is really nasty media. By the way, if your car wouldn't run on horse piss, would you try to "fix" your car so it would?
