I bought my mother a Samsung DVD-AR650 to copy her Korean dramas from VHS to dvd. On some of the tapes, while trying to record, the Samsung dvd recorder gives an error message saying the VHS is copy protected and can not record it.

The VHS tapes I am trying to record are about 10 years old. She recorded them from tapes she borrowed from the Korean video store. So the tapes we are trying to record to dvd are copies made on blank VHS tapes you'd buy from the store. They are not commercial tapes. Since we were able to record the tapes to a blank VHS tapes, I'm assuming there is no copy protection involved.

I was wondering if anyone knew a way to record these tapes? I was thinking the problem might be because the tapes are so old. I tried searching for answers online and the only thing I came up with was a way to copy commercial, copy protected VHS tapes to DVD. To solve this problem you would need to buy a device to get rid of the Macrovision protection. Since, our VHS tapes are not commercial tapes, I don't know what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I suspect the means to copy these tapes is the same as commercial tapes. It sounds like they ARE old and have some form of playback problem that is causing the CGMS or MV systems on the DVD recorder to react.

The fact that they were recorded VHS to VHS OK does not rule out the possibility that the tapes may contain a copy protection that prevents recording them onto a DVD disc. In that case you would need something like a SCC2 (Sima Color Corrector 2). I hear that they're no longer manufactured, but you might find one on ebay or elsewhere. Alternately you might find a DVD recorder which will work, i.e. ignores the copy protection, but it would probably have to be an older model.

Copying rentals is a big no-no. Be it DVD or VHS.
    Read the AUP again.
