What I would like to do is backup some of my dvds. I hope to accomplish this by ripping them to my hardrive as one big file then play the movie back using powerdvd or ati dvd player. I think I can connect the s-video out(from my ati all in wonder radeon 8500) to the s-video in of my svhs vcr. my question is will this work and could someone provide any tips or a brief guide on how to do this?? :P Thank You in advance

I haven't tried this, but after you use Smartripper to put the raw .vob files on your computer, you can certainly play the movie back in it's DVD clarity using your PowerDVD and should be able to output to your SVHS. I think the Smartripper takes the Macrovision devils away...I'd be interested to see if it works well.

I too think it will work, my concern is how too rip the dvd into one large vob file because i dont want to have a pause between vobs. Anyone know if there is a hardware/software player that completely removes macrovision?

You don't have to rips as one single vob-file! Just use Smartrippers backup-option to copy the whole DVD into a folder at the root of your HD partition (all vobs, ifos etc.).
Then, rename this folder as video_ts and you can play it with any DVD player (for example: you have the full content of a DVD in D:\video_ts. Now, start WinDVD ->Select preferences->Choose DVD drive letter as D:->movie starts to play)
This way you'll have access to all the DVD features (menus, subtitles etc.) -
be sure to switch display res to 720x480 + uncheck lock aspect ratio(my aiw pro agp supports this) or 640x480 & disable software bob(force weave) or output to your vcr will be deinterlaced which is very undesirable

thanks for the help could you be a bit more specific about what you mean by disable software bob(force weave) and how do i go about doing this?

in powerdvd you place a checkmark next to 'force weave' on the advanced video dialogue. you uncheck 'software bob' in windvd if they haven't changed it around
