I installed Windows Vista 32 on a small harddrive just to play with and learn. Now I would like to move it to a larger harddrive and let it become my new OS. Can this be done by connecting the larger harddrive to a USB port? If so what software will do it best.

  2. Your best bet would be to piggyback the large hard drive with the drive that already has Vista installed. The larger hard drive would be just another hard drive.
Believing yourself to be secure only takes one cracker to dispel your belief.

    To deviated2:

My system has 4 harddrives including the OS, so there is a requirement for a larger harddrive for the OS. Thanks anyway.

  4. Acronis - very highly rated; do a search in Google

    1) Make a bootable CD with Acronis
    2) Clone your OS HD to one of your other HD
    3) Boot with the CD and transfer the image to your new larger HD

The other option is Norton Ghost

  5. Most retail hard drives come with cloning software. Often a stripped down version of Acronis.

Yup, Seagate has cloning software which is provided by Acronis.
As jagabo mentioned it's a stripped down version but very handy to just create a backup image of the "C" drive on another hard drive.

  7. The software is usually available at the drive manufacturer's web site too. The only requirement is that you must have one of the manufacturer's drives in your computer (even as an external drive). It doesn't have to be the drive you're migrating to.

For example, here Seagate's DiscWizard software:

Thanks to all that helped with this thread:

I have decided to go with the Acronis Clone Disk method.

Now to find a large ATA 133 harddrive.
