Sony has announced a new version of Vegas and Adobe now has Premiere CS3. Which one would you choose if you were looking to buy a new editor?

I downloaded the Vegas Pro 8 30 day demo Monday morning. I plan to play with it this weekend. It looks good in the specs. http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/products/product.asp?PID=457&PageID=108

I still think Vegas is the best product for the one man band. The Adobe suite fits for web development and doing corp media projects (e.g. promotion, training, event work). They are it for flash media.

Since Sony took over Vegas, their main strategic focus has been to broaden the product to fit the full Sony line of camcorder and tape formats. First was SD/HD uncompressed SDI in/out and then native HDV editing. Now they're adding XDCAM and AVCHD. Finally they are adding functionality for the DV format guy including multi-camera, more titling, more 24p and multi- track audio. Also support for flash import and export to Blu-Ray DVD and Digital Signage. Oh and the PSP Playstation protable (but not the iPod? heh).

  3. Vegas 8 Pro has the ability, like 7 did, to export for iPod. Unfortunately it doesn't support less vertical resolution than 480, for widescreen iPods (iPod Touch, iPhone) &/or movies that are just in widescreen, and therefore must encode with black bars (letterboxing) to retain the widescreen image. Lets hope an update to 8 will include that.

Vegas has much simpler user interface then Premiere.Everything you made with Premiere you can make it with Vegas also. You can find much more tutorials, forums and plugins for Vegas then Premiere on internet.
I have use Vegas since Sonic Foundry (Vegas 4). Vegas 7 is more stable version then Vegas 8 yet.
If someone needs links for additional plugins for Vegas (transitions, filters, titlers....or Vegas forum) I will send the post.
    Regards.

How would you compare the associated authoring program DVD Architect Pro with DVD Lab Pro? I use DVD Lab Pro and I'm familiar and comfortable with it. Is there a reason to change to DVD Architect? I'm willing to learn a new authoring environment if I get something out of it bit I don't want to do it for "fun".

I am also a DLP user, and moved there from DVD Architect. I find architect fiddly and unintuitive. A lot of people say the same about DLP, so what do I know ? I know that DLP suits the way I work, and has extra features, such as the ability to get into the code if you need to, or the ability to use menu cells, that Architect doesn't have.

That said, certain feature of Vegas need to be purchased separately if you don't get the Vegas/Architect bundle - specifically 5.1 AC3 encoding and mpeg-2 encoding. It usually works out cheaper to get the bundle than to license the AC3 and Mpeg-2 modules separately.

Thanks for the tip! You just saved me some money and an unhappy surprise. No 5.1 AC3 encoding and mpeg-2 encoding with the unbundled Vegas - bummer!

You might want to confirm this for version 8, but that has been the policy on previous versions.

    None of that is true.
Premiere has a lot of streaming/Flash technology embedded in it for CS3.
Both programs have ample tutorials, plugins, etc.
