The SONY DVP-NS3100ES only upconverts to 1080i but the DVP-NS77H goes to 1080p and costs $400 less???!?
what's the deal with that?
is the ns77h just a newer line?
since it's only upconversion and not the real deal will i notice a difference between these two players if i'm watching on a 1080p television?
your input is greatly appreciated!![]()

woah ok....i've never even heard of "inverse telecine" but i think i understand what you are getting at.
well i don't have the tv yet...but my plan is to get a good 46inch based on the research i've done....sony xbr or samsung or sharp aquos etc 1080p with all the bells and whistles. so i can say that whatever i end up will be "legit" meaning much better than the "average lcd".
and so what about this scenario::
both of these dvd players do an excellent job upscaling.
the expensive one works great simulating 1080i and the cheaper model does a great job simulating 1080p.
....am i really going to notice the difference in video quality?
main point of this whole thread is that i would like to get this unit based on my history with sony and their ES line. imo they make a good upper mid-range line of components. but then i keep telling myself "this unit does not even upconvert to 1080p??!?!?!"
HA! i called sony to discuss the issue and the woman couldn't tell me a thing. i also had a SACD question for her and she said "what's SACD??"
"oh you know....a format that YOUR COMPANY has pioneered!!!"
was really funny....but also got me nowhere lolz!
thanks for the reply man....keep em comin! -
First, get off the bandwagon of "1080P is better". Especially when you are talking about upconverting standard DVD's. If you are spending the money to upgrade to HD, then you should also be wanting to use HD source material to take advantage of the money you are spending.
As noted above, assuming you get a decent TV, the DVD players ability to upconvert is likely irrelevant. It will boil down to the type of TV you have and which unit (TV or DVD player) can perform the upconversion better. Until you even have the TV, there isn't much point in going any further with the discussion.
Upconversion aside, concentrate on getting a DVD player that has quality picture reproduction. Quality video reproduction is more important than upconversion.

If you get a quality in TV processor, then you can feed it 1080i or 1080p and it will handle it. The main source of native 1080p is a BluRay or HD DVD player.
If you want to understand this in more depth you need to thoroughly understand this document. It is all about conversion of 24p film source from the DVD plant or broadcaster to your progressive TV panel and all the interlacing and deinterlacing steps along the way. The document explains how DVD players and TV processors work and is a great intro to digital television concepts.
