I have used Vegas to edit and render an AVI and am attempting to encode it to MPG with TMPGEncPlus 2.5 as I've done (at least) dozens of times before without any issue. I intend to author this in TDA 2.0 and burn onto a DL disc (which I've also done successfully with other projects).

In screen 4 of the TMPGEnc Plus Project Wizard, after I've selected/confirmed the resolution and video bitrate, I click on next to proceed to encoding the file, but get the following error:

The movie is too long to output.

The file can not exceed 3 hours (180 min) if audio format is Linear PCM.

The file is showing as 200 min 33 sec long and "should" (I think) fit onto a DL DVD (even with separate uncompressed audio), depending on the bitrate at which it is encoded of course. I am getting the error regardless of what bitrate I specify and even if I select "Unknown media".

Any ideas and suggestions on what to do differently to get this encoded will be greatly appreciated.

why not skip the double conversion and just use vegas to encode to mpeg-2 directly? quicker and less loss of detail.

  3. 3 hours of LPCM audio will be about 2 GB. That's probably why TMPGEnc limits you to 3 hours. The audio is taking up a significant portion of the disc.

    Thanks for the responses.

I haven't just encoded from within Vegas since I believe that uses the Mainconcept encoder and I had always been led to believe (based on numerous comments on this site) that TMPGEnc produced superior results. I've not had any complaints with the quality resulting from the method I'm using, I just can't get this file to encode.

I agree, the audio file is over 2 gigs, 2.15 to be exact. As I stated in my original post, I intend to burn this to DL disc, so that leaves around 6 gigs for video, etc. Wouldn't the space required for the video file depend on the rate at which it was encoded? If I'm selecting "Unknown media", should there be any restriction on the size of the output file, since there is no way for TMPGEnc to know what I intend to use it for anyway?

Also, I'm not seeing anything along the lines of "the file size will exceed the space available on the media", it's in terms of time. Is there a time limitation in TMPGEnc and/or for MPEG-2 files in general?

Would be very interested in and appreciative of other comments.

tmpgenc 2.5 was ok 4 or 5 years ago..... mainconcept, cce and others are much improved these days the results from the tmpgenc "wizard" were never as good as you could get from manual settings anyway.

I don't know where you read that, but not so. They are both good encoders. TMPGEnc is very slow compared to Mainconcept, but MC is as good or better, depending on who you ask.

Why not set the encoder to 'DVD 8.5GB'?
