    hi i am new here i have been wondering about hdmi upconversion about a couple of dvd/vcr combos in particular the newer sony rdr-vx555 it says upconverts dvd and vhs i know about dvd but wondering how picture quality will look with just hdmi any thoughts?

    also has an s video output would that make an improvement also?

    The picture will only be as good as the original recording.
    So hdmi will ouput whatever the recording looks like.

    I seriously doubt it would make any improvement on VHS, but you won't know until you try it. Also, depending on your TV, most upconverting players are irrelevant. Upconversion is only necessary for HDTV's (obviously) and if you have an LCD or Plasma TV, the TV is already performing upconversion/downconversion to match the input to the native resolution of the screen. It then becomes an issue of which converter is better, the TV or the player. Also note that you want to input at the resolution closest to the native resolution of your TV.

    S-Video will be lower resolution than HDMI. Most VHS players have S-Video output and it is preferred over coax.
