It varies from player to player (based on chipset). Aside from PAL to NTSC (or NTSC to PAL) conversion, you also need a player that is region free (or can be hacked). If you know you want region free/PAL support , it is best to get a player known to support it. Hacks don't always work, even on newer models of a player known to be hackable.

For excellent PAL to NTSC conversion, I recommend the Oppo units (I have the 971). http://www.oppodigital.com/

  3. thanks for that info. Do you notice a big difference with the Upconvert player. A guy at best buy told me there no noticable difference.

It depends on your TV,some have better upscaling chips.I bet the guy at BB was trying to sell you a HD player.

Philips DVD players generally do. The highly regarded Oppo line of players

not only can play both PAL and NTSC DVDs, they come region free out of the box.

Some HDTVs do very good upconversion on their own. Samsung HDTVs typically are excellent in this regard. For such TVs, it is not necessary to have an upconverting DVD player as the TV will automatically upconvert to its native display resolution. It's hard for me to know what to tell you as if you display regular DVD on an HDTV then SOMETHING (either the TV or the player) is doing the upconversion. Please don't believe what guys at Best Buy tell you. Sales people in electronics stores are rarely given the training necessary to honestly know what they are talking about and they often will just say whatever they think the customer wants to hear. Maybe you seemed skeptical and the guy picked up on it, so he told you what he thought you wanted to hear. The next customer might have been told that upconverting DVD players were the greatest thing since sliced bread.

This one Samsung DVD-HD870 can play PAL. I don't have it, but the manual says it does. This is the one that I keep my eye on if I need a new player.

Quality varies by player and your TV as noted above.

There is also a difference in PAL to NTSC conversion. Again, this varies from player to player.
