My buddy just received 9 nine DVD's (1 per game) of his son's football season and asked me to go through the films and extract the video where his son was involved with a tackle and put it all together onto one DVD so that he can send it off to division one colleges so that he can perhaps get a scholarship. He also said by he way, his number is 99.
I explained to him that this is a huge volume of work that I don't have time to do but if he went through the video and extracted the clips, I would put it together on a DVD for him.
I was thinking about ripping the DVD's to avi and then using a virtual dub to go through and extract the clips or perhaps work with mpeg clips to do the same thing. I don't know if this would be a good approach and I need some direction and suggested programs. I want to know if there is a program that I could give to my friend to watch the video, tag the clips and at the end extract them all to one directory. I would take it from there. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
VC

It always helps to know the sports subjects number...
You can turn the timecode on to see when the play involving #99 happened and jot it down.
27 hours of football...ugh -
Have him watch the videos on any DVD player with on screen display and write an edit list. Take the DVDs into DVD Shrink reauthor mode and extract the clips per his start end times. Done.

It works fast and with small clips I would not bother with batch processing......just mark the scene, add the selection, save the project as, save the video as, close the file; open the last project, use the tab key to move to the end of the scene from the last project, mark out the next scene, add the selection, remove the prior scene, save the project as (auto successive project naming), then save the video as (auto successive file naming), close the file; open the last project, etc, etc ad infinitum.
VideoReDo will also make one mpg by joining the VOBs, but you must first do a quick stream fix on each one. Better to just use VOB2MPG first. -

all players come with display counters/clocks...that's how we can find stuff
if the clock isn't running, the video may be corrupt
but look on the bright side
#99 can't play both offense and defense... -
Your friend will work himself to death (and you too) playing each disk back and writing down the beginning and ending time code for each scene or clip, for later use (by you I assume) in shrink using reauthor mode.
If he has a PC with XP and a reasonable size drive(s), he can watch the mpgs in VideoReDo and save each clip as he finds them (See my Post above for more info). I'm assuming either he or you have a external hardrive whereby you can move the clips from his PC to yours.
If he wants transitions (which I wouldn't do because of the required re-encoding) make sure he leaves a 2 or 3 second handle on each end.
TDA 2 would make quick work of producing a DVD folder with menus for easy access to each clip or group of clips........no transitions, no re-encoding, and no reduction in quality.
Free 15 day trial on VideoReDo and 30 days on TDA 3. Surely your friend can do his part in 15 days. -
Thanks guys. You given me great direction and suggestions. Now It's time for me to get busy. I might hit you back up if I get stuck.
thanks for the advice,

Try dvdshink 2.3 ... not the later which included directx9 for audio playback , it has a bug in audio cuts which will show up later and cause issues when joining multiple clips .

Considering it took me about a half an hour to do one 1/4 of the game, this whole process for nine DVD's going to take forever. Do you recommend any guides that describe the batch selection function. I would like to learn if not for this project maybe for some others.
