    Hello.

I have a video CD. (or a super video CD, I am not sure) of 3 minutes length in black and wire with no sound - only video. It is of my grandparents so it is valuable to our family.

I want to convert it to DVD or whatever format is compatible with DVD DeCrypter. Why? I want to make it usable with the excellent DVD DeCrypter so I may put the video file on my hard drive in order to make a copy of the DVD - when needed.

The original is an MPG file.

How do I do this? I have it on this Video CD format which is difficult to copy (with Nero and other programs) as well as dicey to play on some CD/DVD players.

    Thank you

Do you have the original MPG?

If not, I'd start by using vcdgear to extract the mpg video from the VCD.

It depends how this "disc" was authored .

You could try vcdgear to pull the mpeg from vcd .

Beyond that , you might need to consider the following

If its made by pictures = screen snap shots during playback on pc ... mwsnap (handy)
If its an actual movie = camstudio + camstudio's video codec works quite well
(recompress back to mpeg source after)

    All are free

    ==

If you have the mpeg already , and it is dvd compliant , you need an authoring tool before you use either dvddecryter (old) , or imgburn (new) to burn to dvd ... unless of course your current player supports direct playback of mpeg's .

You may need to demux the mpeg source first before authoring .

Dvdauthorgui combines both authoring and demuxing (via batchdemux)
If batchdemux is unable to demux the mpeg , there are many other tools capable

Take a squizz through the tools section ... I recommend trying free software first before any trialware gets into your system ... a lot are just rubbish ... esspecially rotten products such as tmpgenc (bugs from day one) .

You could also get an "se" version of ulead videostudio 9 in ebay cheap , which would do all you need and much more ... its relatively easy for those starting out .

If you need any pointers , just ask .

Also, the movie is exactly 1 minute 34 seconds long so I would not need chapters or menus. There is no music or sound which makes the task even simpler.

This Video CD plays easily and immediately on Windows Media player and Widows Media Playter Classic. It will not play on my new Sony or my new Phillips DVD players. I want the disk to be a DVD so I can play it on a DVD player and use DVD DeCrypter to copy it.

    Please instruct.

    Thank you.

It was made form an actual home movie, not mapped screen shots.

I assume I was given a copy and not the original authored video CD. But I am not sure. The uncle who did it is dead.

Is there a free DVD authoring tool that is extremely simple / easy?

    Thanks

What you have is an SVCD. I'd let you compare with the "What is SVCD" on the left, but OMG! it is no longer there! Baldrick?

ANyway, best app with which to rip this is IMHO VCDEasy. You could use the freeware 1.152 version that still is availalbe in places, but I prefer the commercial version (curr 3.02) for ~$20, more bug-free and more features, etc.

With it, you can use the VCDXRIP tool to rip the whole contents of the disc, which also may include stills/menus, etc, and also an XML of the structure in case you want to do a similar structure in DVD format. The MPEG2 will have its CDXA headers properly removed with this tool...

NOw, you need to use something like SVCD2DVD which will automate the SRC of the audio, the Resolution/resize of the Video, to conform to DVD specs.
Then just author how you like and burn!

I have downloaded and opened the VCD GEAR software. Specifically, what do I do? Nothing here looks familiar to me.

I already have a Video CD that plays with ease on Windows Media Player. Do I still need to use this VCD Gear ? Why?

    Thanks .

first get the actual mpg out of the svcd. download vcdgear 3.55 run it. select vcdgear/mpeg-->mpg/click load/navigate to the mpeg folder in the cd/select the avseq01.mpg/choose a destination location on your hard drive/click start.

download convertxtodvd free version from the download page. run it, drag your new mpg into it and convert it to dvd folders.

download imgburn and use it in build mode to burn the dvd folder to dvdr.
