Hey all, I am pretty darn new and green to all the technical conversion stuff, but would really like to preserve all my old vhs tapes to dvd. I have an older Intel USB Webcam that I've used to transfer a few test runs I did from my VCR to my PC running them through the webcam as the analog to digital converter.

but the only program I have used to do that transfer (capture?) so far is the built into XP Microsoft Movie Maker.

It doesn't look bad, and my requirements are VERY low regarding quality of output. I wanted to mention that becuase I am sure the majority of folks here probably balk at the idea of lesser quality being acceptable to anyone.

so my question to you all is simply what is teh best FREE program I should use to either capture right to DVD format, or if that is not possible, then convert the wmv's I'd end up with all to DVD?

Thank you enormously. I hope to hear back from you real soon as I'd like to spend this weekend doing these tapes.
    Chuck

p.s. I really don't know what specific settings to use in MovieMaker to get the best output either, so any help there would sure be greatly appreciated.

I would use Windows Movie Maker to capture and edit, export to dv-avi and then convert to dvd with favc or dvd flick.
