My brother's pc is not good enough to play back 1080p files without the sound going out of sync, so I got some that will stream through his xbox over our network from my PC hardrive.

They do work, however I find that the video can be choppy sometimes.

Whats the best way to convert these 1080p WMV files to 720p WMV so that he can stream them on XBOX360?
    (best in terms of quality).

    I would appreciate any advice.

Windows Media Encoder. Use a kinda high bitrate(6-10Mbit/s) and you shouldn't notice any big difference.

You could also reconvert to MP4 with H264 video and AAC audio using for example Xvid4PSP and it should work to stream.

  3. Converting to MP4 is OK if you are simply streaming videos to the 360, however if you are using the 360 as an extender with Media Center, then MP4 files wont play.

Are you using wireless? That's not really recommended with HD video owing to the high bitrates involved Choppy video can be caused by that.

Nah, not wifi, using a wired network.

    My PC > Netgear 10/100 swtich > netgear router > netgear 10/100 switch > xbox360

wondering if the cheap netgear router is maybe creating the choppiness issue.

will try using windows media encoder tho see how the 720p versions fare.

  5. Encode360 is frontend to Windows Media Encoder and is much better at handling formats such as MKV and AVI than the one included with the encoder.

Try encoding in WVC1 using Quality Based VBR set to around 90, audio quality 98. Be warned though, Windows Media Encoder is not the fastest encoder ever...
